GHQ to be shifted to Islamabad

Decision has been taken to shift Army General Headquarters (GHQ) from Rawalpindi to Islamabad.

The site which was selected and inaugurated by the former president Pervez Musharraf in 2004 has been selected for construction of GHQ.

2500 acres land is allocated for this project which is to be completed at the estimated cost of Rs 70 billion.

Sources said the defence complex in connection with GHQ was inaugurated in 2004 and work was started on it in 2007. The then army chief Gen (Retd) Ashfaq Pervez Kiani had got the construction work suspended. The then secretary defence Lt Gen (Retd) Alam Khan Khattak was of the view that the construction work was suspended in view of the international situation. He said that Kallar Kahar was the most suitable place for GHQ.

Sources said that contrary to the decision taken in 2008, decision has been made once against to shift GHQ to Islamabad.

It may be mentioned that decision for shifting GHQ to federal capital was taken following life attempts on former president Pervez Musharraf in 2003. However opposition parties opposed this project at that time because of acquisition of land on cheaper rates for GHQ.
