ISLAMABAD: There is a saying “If you set a trap for others, you will get caught in it yourself” that’s what happened with Maya Khan, an anchor of Samaa TV morning show and her team, who have been terminated by the management for running an unethical show.

In a massage issued by the management the CEO Zafar Siddiqui said that Maya Khan and her team will receive termination notices and her show will be stopped from Monday morning.

The management took this decision after a controversial episode of Maya’s morning show, where she was seen conducting a ‘raid’ on a public park in Karachi and questioning couples about whether their parents were aware of their whereabouts and going as far as asking them about their marital status.

The show was broadcast live on Samaa TV on Jan. 17, and set off a furious reaction in parts of Pakistan. Khan was criticized furiously on social media networks.

People blamed Khan for asking unethical and stupid questions such as demanding to see proof of marriage to a couple who claimed to be married.

Soon after the hourlong spectacle broadcast, the non-government organizations, working on human rights, took stand and asked the Samaa TV management to take action against Maya Khan. The NGOs also threatened to file a civil suit against the TV in supreme court.

An outrage reaction has also seen on social media website such as facebook and youtube where people seen asking question such as “who gave her right to ask people whether they are married or not and what they are doing in public parks?”

Some users even uploaded Khan’s picture with unknown men and asked her to look at herself first before judging others. People also criticized the TV management for allowing her to run this immoral show on the TV.

When the management of the TV realized that the situation is going out of control, they asked Khan to apologize which according to management, she refused at first but agreed after being forced by the TV management.

Khan apologized from the nation and said that her intentions were not to hurt anyone but if someone is hurt then she is sorry for that.

However the management has now decided to terminate Khan and her whole team.

The letter that was issued on Saturday by the CEO Zahid Siddiqi says

Dear all,

Your feedback is appreciated. As a responsible corporate citizen, Samaa TV did what was required under the circumstances. We do not and have not in the past or intend to in the future to take our viewership or reporting requirements without the seriousness that they deserve.

You would appreciate that as an organisation with a functioning management team, we had to conduct certain legal requirements over the past week and internal review processes (which are operational in nature) before procedding further.

As a result of which I can inform you:

  • We asked Maya to apologise unconditionally which she did not.
  • The CEO asked her to do that on Friday which she refused.

As a result of which the following will be put in place on Monday, Jan 30th.

  • Maya and her team will receive termination notices.
  • Her show is being stopped from Monday morning.

Our deeds and actions taken since this episode occured are there for the record and hope this will settle issues as far as the station is concerned.

A lot has been written about the race for ratings. Well, we do absolve such behaviour irrespective of ratings that the show was getting.

With best regards and thank you for your understanding.

  1. I appreciate the actions which President of CNBC Pakistan have taken against Maya Khan. I will appreciate if the whole team be terminated and a new host should be there in the morning show of samaa tv. According to my point of view this was really rubbish, it was fascinating and it was against the views of society and what the problem she had with the couples and who she is to ask about the nikkah form, no one is carring a nikkah form in their pockets. Does she have a legal notice to do this a inquiry should be made on all this matter and she should be given a appropriate  punishment according to the crime she conducted.

  2. Maya answers the critics??? Bilal Lakhani is on twitter saying that Maya Khan will be coming on Kamran Shahid’s show Monday night on Express news.

Rumour has it that she is going to join Express and this is going to be her ‘big apology’ to win back fans and critics with rhona dhona and insincere words of regret.

Shame on Kamran Shahid for giving her this platform. Hasn’t HE learnt from the Balouchistan show that ratings aren’t everything?

Maya shouldn’t be allowed back on TV after what she’s done…
