ABBOTABAD: At least nine rockets were fired on Pakistan Military Academy or PMA Kakul in Abbotabad early Friday, officials said.

District Coordination Officer Imtiaz Hussain Shah said that no one was hurt in the pre-dawn fire.

He told the media that rockets hit the eastern outer wall of the PMA and partially damaged it. He said the rockets landed between 3.30 a.m. and 3.45 a.m.

PMA is located near the town were Osama bin Laden was killed on May 2 by the US military.

Shah said the rockets were believed to be fired from the nearby Nawan Shar area. He said there had been no ‘damage inside the academy and everything is safe’.

Another official said that rockets were fired from the nearby hills, overlooking the academy.

Shah said that the army and police launched a combined search operation in the area and hoped that the suspects would soon be arrested. He said the District Police Officer is heading the search operation and he will soon present a report.
“It is the work of terrorists,” he said, adding that security always on high alert in the area due to sensitive installations there.

“We are passing through such a situation and everyone knows who have done it,” he said, when asked as to who may be behind the incident.

The incident happened hours after the Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Abbotabad, in connection with Commanding Officers’ Conference.

An army statement said the Commanding Officers’ Conference on Thursday was a formal event for interaction between unit commanders and senior officers.

Talking on the occasion, gen. Kayani appreciated the efforts of the ‘Frontier Regiment’ in fighting militancy and the commitment and valour of its officers and soldiers.

  1. The terrorists have mastered the art of developing improvised explosives, which have become the main reason for the innocent loss of life.

  2. It is unfortunate that people have been misguided over the years and they are now striking their own country, but it is also encouraging that many are turning away from this path.

  3. People should realize that these terror activities should stop and we should condemn all these illegal activities.
