PM to head high-level probe into Haqqani issue

ISLAMABAD: PM, Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that he would personally head the high level committee probing the Hussain Haqqani issue .

Talking to media after attending the concluding session of second women conference, in Islamabad he said that many issues of National importance had occurred in past, necessitating countless committees, which never functioned.

“I had publicly announced on the Assembly floor that the facts regarding the memo scandal would soon be resolved, as I would personally lead a high-level committee formed for the purpose, which I would be heading” he declared.

He also stressed that if Hussain Haqqani was found involved, he (Haqqani) would be asked for his resignation, while other investigations would also be brought forward.

“Haqqani has already been asked to submit his resignation, and I assure my critics that all investigations, probes would be fair and transparent” he stated.

Earlier while addressing the concluding session of International policewomen Conference, the PM said that police was a mandatory instrument of assuring peace and law in any country.
“Holding a women police conference is aimed at bringing in perfection within police department, so that services to the community could be rendered with finesse”, he deliberated, adding that government had strong resolve to provide National community with an outstanding police force as such.

The PM also highlighted the status granted to women by Islam, a tenet being assiduously followed by the present government. He cited appointment of women in various ministries and departments, besides the first ever women’s Islamic banking system and BISP (Benazir Income Support Program) introduced by former deceased PM, Benazir Bhutto.

On the occasion, he also publicly issued directives to interior ministry and police department to discourage all kinds of violence perpetuated on women.

Talking to media afterwards, he also reiterated strong adherence of PPPP to democratic ideals, stressing that mandate of all had been respected at all times, expecting an equal reciprocity over the issue.

Replying to a question, he said that general elections would be held in 2013, and parties interested in contesting were already canvassing.

“There should be no doubts about 2013 elections being on time and transparent “, he stressed.

Replying to a question regarding Mian Nawaz Sharif, the PM lauded Mian Sahib’s stance regarding senate election as quite prudent and respectable and reminded that it was not an easy job to preserve and nurture democracy in such testing times.
He said that government faced no dangerous scandal, and would complete its legal tenure, as such.
