ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to withdraw its order to censor SMSes on the uproar of customers and operators, industry sources said.
According to sources, the authority has taken back its orders to block SMS containing English and Urdu words through cellular operators under the immense pressure from the customers that termed action of PTA as violation of privacy.
Sources also said that operators and experts of the telecom sector also responded negatively on the PTA action, terming it an imminent loss of business and disruption in communications between the subscribers.
They said the blockage of SMSes due to filtration will cause legal issues against the operators and authorities therefore; it should be avoided at any cost.
The authority is seeking time to revamp its censorship policy through consultation with civil society representatives and mobile phone operators regarding offensive words.
PTA’s official said that the authority will come up with different solution and list of words for operators that will be deemed to consider as offensive and obscene words.
Officials also said that the authority will continue to work for protecting customers from spam and obnoxious SMSes.
