LAHORE: Punjab chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif while addressing the PML-N anti-government rally called upon President Zardari to resign.
Sharif was addressing the participants of the PML-N rally gathered at Bhati Gate. The rally started from the historic Nasser Bagh earlier on Friday and was led by prominent PML-N leaders.
Sharif said Zardari was depositing the nation’s wealth in Swiss bank accounts and the time had come for him to be held accountable for his actions. Sharif sent a message to President Zardari that he “could not buy PML-N workers.”
Sharif added that during the tenure of this government PIA and Pakistan Railways had been ruined and officials in the government were highly corrupt.
“If we can defeat Dengue, Zardari we can defeat you” Sharif said adding that the president was not aware of the people’s problems and was only concerned about accumulating money.
Pakistan, he said, is witnessing that the sea of people gathered here in Lahore today is ready for the final showdown. He said that Pakistan Railways, PIA, Steel Mills and every other public institution are in the grips of corruption and commission mafia.
Shahbaz prompted rally goers to raise Go Zardari slogans and also recited the ‘Mein nahin manta… I don’t recognize’ poem of revolutionary poet Habib Jalib.
He said Zardari was responsible for Pakistan’s current bad situation. The city of Lahore had been draped with giant hoardings, banners, posters and fliers, presenting an atmosphere of elections before the rally.
The rally, without any doubt, was expected to raise the political temperature in the country. Citizens were describing the whole atmosphere as the beginning of the government’s end.
Meanwhile, strict security arrangements had been put in place on this occasion. Some 2, 500 Punjab Police personnel had been stationed in the city.
