TRIPOLI: Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was buried on Tuesday morning in a secret location in desert, an Arab news channel reported.

According to Al-Jazeera channel which quoted officials of the ruling Libyan National Transitional Council, the body of Col Muammar Gaddafi will be buried early Tuesday in a “simple” ceremony in the desert.

Gaddafi’s body has been placed on public display in a cold storage container in Misurata alongside another son Mutassim and his army chief since they were all killed in Sirte on Thursday.

Gaddafi loyalists had requested that he be buried in his hometown of Sirte, whereas officials wanted to prevent his grave becoming a loyalist shrine.

Meanwhile deceased Gaddafi fugitive son Saif al-Islam prepares to flee the country, the country’s interim leaders announced.

Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi’s anointed heir, was near Libya’s borders with Niger and Algeria and planning to flee the country using a forged passport, NTC official said.
