TRIPOLI: An Arab television station has claimed that Libya’s former dictator Moamer Kadhafi has been shot dead during a clash, however, pro-Kadhafi television website deny the ‘strongman’ has been killed or captured.

According to media reports the final assault began around 8 a.m. and ended about 90 minutes later. Just before the battle, about five carloads of Gaddafi loyalists tried to flee the enclave down the coastal highway that leads out of the city. But they were met by gunfire from the revolutionaries, who killed at least 20 of them.

On the other hand the U.S. State Department on Thursday said it could not confirm that deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been captured and wounded in both legs.

“We’ve seen the media reports but can’t confirm them,” State Department spokeswoman Beth Gosselin told. (Agencies)
