PESHAWAR: At least 40 people were killed and 100 wounded when a bomb exploded at a mosque in Jamrod during Friday prayers.

According to the initial reports about five hundred people were present in the mosque to offer Friday prayers.

Mujahid Khan, spokesman for the Edhi ambulance service, told that at least 40 people had been killed and 60 injured.

The attack was carried out in the Ghandi area of Jamrud in Khyber Agency, one of the seven tribal districts along the Afghan border, after Friday prayers

The entire mosque collapsed after the blast and it is feared that many people have been buried under the debris of the mosque.

“There are body parts, there is mutilated flesh so we can’t say whether it was a planted bomb or a suicide attack,” according to officials

According to one eyewitness account, 40 people are said to have died. The sound of the explosion was heard even in far off areas according to the initial report.

According to an official at the Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar 40 wounded people had been rushed there alone.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Friday’s bomb was the deadliest since twin attacks killed 39 people in Peshawar, ripping through a crowded supermarket-hotel complex on June 12.
