KARACHI: Departmental action has started as per recommendations of Board of Inquiry (BOI) probing attack on PSN Mehran that had cost life of ten security personnel and destruction of P3C Orion aircraft.
A senior Navy official requesting not to be named confirmed to Online that BOI has given recommendations after completing its process. “As per the recommendations of the BOI, the departmental action has been initiated,” he added.
According to the official, it was premature to say whether or not certain officials would face court martial.
Earlier a private TV channel quoted sources saying that army have begun the court martial of three senior officials held responsible for lapses during a terrorist attack on a naval airbase in the southern port city of Karachi in May.
According to the Channel’s sources, the court martial proceedings initiated after a naval board of inquiry into the attack on the PNS Mehran airbase submitted its findings. The commanding officer of PNS Mehran, the naval aviation commander, and security officer of the airbase are facing court martial, it claimed adding that some other officers may also face consequences.
The five-member military court conducting the proceedings is led by an officer of the rank of commodore. A board of inquiry headed by Rear Admiral Tehsinullah Khan had probed the terrorist attack on PNS Mehran on May 22 that killed 10 security personnel and destroyed two P3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.
Four attackers were gunned down or blew themselves up after a 16-hour standoff within the airbase. The reports have suggested that the attackers might have had inside assistance.
It is vital to note down here that senior journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad was abducted and killed days after he alleged in an article that al-Qaeda had infiltrated the Pakistan Navy.

This was one of the worst attacks on a military installation in the country. All aspects should be investigated and the terrorists involved in the attacks should be tracked down and brought to justice.
