80 million voters registered 37 million removed: ECP

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan has said that 37 million names in the electoral list were found in-valid and therefore removed after verification by NADRA.

Talking to media men after a meeting with officials from NADRA, PCO and other departments here in the office of ECP, he said that number of registered voters in the electoral roll of 2007 were 81 million.

“Out of the total registered voters in the list about 37 million were not matching with the database of NADRA and any one can verify it,” he said, adding that about 36 million newly registered voters in accordance with NADRA database of CNIC were added in the list and number of the registered voters now reached to about 80 million.

The secretary said that door-to-door verification is going to be launched from 18 July that would continue until August 16. And the electoral roll to be finalized until December, he added. He said that the new forms would carry a portion for condition of citizenship.

He said that NADRA, and Population Census Organization role is praise worthy in this connection. “After completion of the computerized roll, the problem that had been continuing for last 50-60 years would be resolved once and for all. After that, only free and fair elections would be possible,” he said.

To a Question, he said that the constitution is clear about dual nationality and elections. “No body who has either cancelled his nationality or have dual nationality cannot contest elections in Pakistan and if any such person is elected he could be disqualified,” he said.

Members of the election commission from all the four provinces, officials from NADRA, Statistic division took part in the meeting, he informed.

  1. This is a good step taken by the supreme court. This is the first and most important factor towards a democratic country. i praise the SC for giving these orders. My only concern is how will they remove these votes and it should be done in a transparent way so that the public has faith in the next elections.
