PM inaugurates Federal Medical and Dental College

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that access to quality health services is inherent right of every citizen and all efforts are being made to take these services to the poorest of the poor.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the newly established Federal Medical and Dental College at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences here Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said the Government is striving to upgrade health infrastructure in rural and urban areas to ease pressure on existing facilities.

Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani noted that this was the first public sector medical college in the country where fee structure will be low and affordable and it will provide top quality medical education at par with international standards.He said the need for a new medical college in this part of the country was increasingly felt as the pressure on existing medical institutions was immense with the growing number of aspirants looking for career in this noble profession.

The Prime Minister said the establishment of the college is yet another major step taken by the democratic government in the health sector.

He pointed out that recently the Government announced a better career structure for doctors, nurses and paramedics. It was a landmark achievement as no previous government had been able to take such a bold and positive step. He said the Government is taking practical measures for provision of integrated health facilities to residents of Bharakahu and rural areas of Islamabad.

The Prime Minister said cognizant of the increasing number of cases of liver infection, he gave instructions for establishment of the country’s first-ever liver transplant centre. Funds were provided and the work is near completion. This will be a life saving facility for thousands of families who suffer because they were unable to afford highly expensive treatment of life threatening conditions. (Observer)
