Ex-health minister spent govt’s Rs 0.9m on his own health

ISLAMABAD: Former Health Minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin spent Rs 900,000 for treatment from abroad during his stint in the ministry, it has been reliably learnt.
According to media reports former minister was suffering from breathing and mental ailments which caused stammering.
As health minister, Makhdoom Shahab did not feel it appropriate to get treatment from the Pakistani hospitals and sent a summary to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat seeking approval for his treatment from abroad on the government expenses.
Although he got the summary approved by the Prime Minister, yet the Finance Minister objected to the summary. Upon that the Finance Ministry was directed to release supplementary grants and ultimately Rs 900,000 special grant was released by the Finance Ministry.
On his return from the UK, Makhdoom Shahbabuddin sought Parliament’s approval for the expenses on his treatment so that they could be made regular, however, according to a private TV channel Auditor General Pakistan had also objected to the summary, which is still to be cleared.
It is important to mention here the Makhdoom Shahib is a feudal and owns property and assets worth millions of rupees. Makhdoom Shahabuddin was not available to give any comment despite several efforts.
