ISLAMABAD: National Juvenile Justice Network (NJJN) and its member non-profit Child protection organizations Tuesday demanded the Government and National Judiciary to review the inhuman and degrading sentences for child offenders.
NJJN surveyed across the country to lookout for the ongoing process of sentences against children and concluded that minors facing unlawful imprisonment, even in few remote areas children were sentenced to hang under section 302.
NJJN with co-ordination of Defence for Children International (DCI) and Child Rights Information Network (CRIN) has started a postcard campaign to convey the message to the Prime Minister (PM). The following postcard campaign is the part of CRIN campaign in which a joint letter from NJJN, CRIN and DCI was included to aware PM.
Coordinator NJJN Abdullah Khoso said that fifteen non-profit organizations participated their efforts to protect the children from rigorous imprisonment.
He said according to the observations and collected data from different provinces, children were accused to verse punishments by our criminal system. Although, in few jails child offenders were imprisoned along with adults and serious criminals.
He said Juvenile Justice System Ordinance (JJSO) was not working upto its standards, non-incursion of further clauses for child protection in the ordinance, delay in implementation of Khyber Pukhtoon-Khwa (KPK) Child protection & Welfare act and Sindh Children Act 1955 were multiple reasons behind these illegal punishments for minors.
Meanwhile NJJN called for child protection according to International and National laws that condemn fierce sentences against child offenders. He said AGHS, Aurat Foundation, Azad Foundation, Dost Welfare Foundaton, HRCP, SAHIL, SANJOG, SEHAR, SHARP,SPARC and Save the Children worked for similar purposes with NJJN.
