Army denies Indian PM contacted COAS

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army has refuted media reports of contact between Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and termed such news as ‘unfounded’ and ‘baseless.

A Spokesman of the ISPR has categorically denied a news item which appeared in the Times of London on April 23 regarding Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani talking to the Indian Prime Minister through an unofficial envoy before the Mohali meeting with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

The Times of London news item is unfounded and totally baseless, spokesman concluded.

London-based The Times had reported that Manmohan Singh had opened secret talks with the head of Pakistan’s military to build on the cricket-inspired diplomatic thaw between the two countries.

It said Manmohan Singh appointed an unofficial envoy about 10 months ago to make contact with Kayani, who exercises de facto control over the country’s foreign policy.

Indian Prime Minister office on Sunday had also denied of any such meeting and had termed the media report as ‘false’.
