ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Friday met his American counterpart Gen. Martin Dempsey and discussed issues how to better coordinate combat operations along the Afghan border.
It was the first visit of Gen. Martin Dempsey since assuming the duties of US army Chief of Staff on April 11, 2011. Both the military leaders also exchanged views on the issue of regional security with special emphasis on Afghanistan and Pak-US military to military relationship, defense sources informed Online on Friday.
Both military leaders also discussed security situation in North Waziristan and Army Chief told his American counterpart that the decision to launch operation in North Waziristan would be taken by Pakistan after taking stock of ground realities, sources said.. Issues related to ongoing operation against extremists in tribal areas, US drone strikes in country’s tribal belt and Pak-US strategic partnership were also discussed in the meeting in length, sources added.
Sources said that Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani reiterated his stance on US drone strikes, saying such strikes is not only undermining our national effort against terrorism but also turning public support against our efforts. US army Chief of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said that his country deeply appreciated Pakistan’s fight against extremism and pledged his country’s unflinching support to Pakistan.
