Saud Aziz, Khurram Shahzad granted bail in BB assassination case

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) while granting bail to Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad accused in Benazir Bhutto assassination case has issued orders for their immediate release.

Former CPO Saud Aziz and former SP Khurram Shahzad had filed their bail pleas with LHC two weeks earlier.

A 2-member bench of LHC presided over by chief justice Ejaz Chaudhry took up the case for hearing Tuesday and granted bail plea.

The court directed them to furnish sureties of Rs 1000000 each and passport to trial court. The prosecution opposed their bail plea and the court was told that Saud Aziz showed sheer negligence on the eve of assassination of Benazir Bhutto and washed the scene immediately. Therefore, all the evidence was removed. Saud Aziz also did not provide his mobile cell during the investigation.

Opposing the arguments, Khawaja Sultan, counsel for Saud Aziz said no direct evidence about involvement of Saud Aziz in Benazir assassination case had been found. Saud Aziz had been involved in investigation of killing conducted by police.

The court hearing the arguments from the both sides had granted bail to both the accused persons and ordered for their immediate release.

  1. It must be remembered that Z.A. Bhutto was originally sentenced to death by the Lahore High Court headed by Justice Maulvi Mushtaq who was a member of Jamaat-e-Islami. The rest of the judges were either former members of the Jamaat or blatantly Jamaat sympathizers. The present Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry during his days as a lawyer was a high profile member of Jamaat-e-Islami. Till he was elevated to the post of judge, he had been involved in Lahore’s legal-Islamofascist politics, which saw a prolonged witch-hunt and thrashing of liberal lawyers. And now as a judge, Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry has violated all norms of justice by releasing Saud Aziz and Shahzad Khurram on bail.
