Govt increases 2% power tariff

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has increased two percent in the power tariffs, which would be enforced with immediate effect. Notification in this regard was also issued here on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Water and Power had sent the summary to Prime Minister’s Secretariat on which Premier Yousaf Raza Gilani has given the approval .The increase would be applicable on the rates of entire distribution companies including KES as well as IPPs and RPPs.

According to the notification the increase would not be implemented on those customers which use upto 50 units per month. Whereas the consumers using electricity from 51 units to 300 units would have to pay two percent. While those use more than 300 units per month would have to pay the increase in the shape of surcharge.

It is pertinent to mention here that the government took the decision to increase in power tariff after the round of talks with International Monetary Fund(IMF) , which were recently held at Islamabad.

It is also worth mentioning that as per previous practice National Electric Power Regulatory Authority(NEPRA) is the body that increase the power tariff on the request of distribution and generation companies but this time NEPRA was ignored in the process and Ministry of Water and Power directly moved the summary to the Prime Minister.
