Women play important role in reduction of child and maternal mortality: Dr. Nabeela Ali

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Party, JSI Dr. Nabeela Ali has said that its very important that women should get together and play their role to minimize the child and maternal mortality in the country.

She said this while speaking to a focus group discussion with the title “Overcoming barriers in Reproductive Health” organised by LEAD Pakistan in connection with International Women’s day held at LEAD house.

The event was attended by a group of senior government officials, media personnel, civil society representatives, health experts, corporate figures and academic professionals.

She said that recent trends in the health sector indicate that Pakistan has begun to significantly lag behind many regional countries in South Asia in rate of reduction of child mortality as well as maternal mortality.

She said that to achieve millennium development goals we need to cross the political and social barriers. She mentioned that integrated evidence based interventions are known but not implemented. She said that we need focused targeted research to understand the determinants of maternal and newborn mortality.

Speaking to the ceremony the project director Asif Jah said that to seek inputs and insights of public health professionals on the role of women leaders and means of engaging them in overcoming barriers in reproductive health.

He said that it is very important to understand the role of the women leaders’ in addressing these barriers, how they can fulfil their role and the prerequisites needed to assert their role.
