Pakistan’s support in climate change and development not to be stopped: Sam Bickersteth

He gives this assurance in a meeting held under the auspices of Lead Pakistan here on Wednesday. The climate experts Malik Ameen Aslam, Shafqat Kakakhail, Chief Environment Planning Commission of Pakistan Dr. Aurangzaib, I.G. Forests Syed Mehmood Nasir, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, Hina Lotia and other concerned experts attended the meeting.
Malik Ameen Aslam gave a presentation on Climate Change & Pakistan and highlighted core issues confronted by Pakistan due to its vulnerability and adverse effects of climate change in terms of devastating floods in recent past. He stressed the need for climate financing to adopt appropriate measures to deal with complex environmental issues.
Sam Bickersteth appreciated the dedicated spirit of Pakistani environment experts who contributed a lot in COP-16 and prepared valuable policy drafts in most concerned topics. He said climate change research activities should be expanded to find ways and means in different sectors and facilitate planners to design suitable polices to be implemented to tackle climate change issues.
He said that CDKN is an UK and Dutch-funded programme, created to help developing countries to tackle the challenges posed by climate change. It supports decision-makers in designing and delivering climate compatible development policies that enable countries to bring prosperity and alleviate poverty, with reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting ways and means conducive for climate change. CDKN does this by funding research, technical advice and knowledge management.
Ali Tauqeer said that Pakistan is a victim of climate change being the most vulnerable country and a number activities are required for adaptation, mitigation, capacity building and technology developing. He said without proper research and technical assistance we can not achieve the required results. He said CDKN is the most appropriate forum which has the capacity to extend technical training and support our experts to update their knowledge and skills so that new projects to deal the issue of environmental degradation especially with relate to climate change.
