ISLAMABAD: United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has phoned Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and exchanged views about various issues including release of US citizen Raymond Davis.
According to details, Hillary phoned Prime Minister Gilani and once again insisted upon diplomatic immunity of Davis, thus seeking his immediate release. However, the Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s stance that the matter was in a court of law and we would have to wait for its verdict.
According to reports, the two leaders agreed that the two countries should not allow just one incident to spoil their bilateral relations having a history of over 60 years. In a bid to ease tensions the Secretary of State also discussed bilateral issues other than that of Davis.
Senior officials described the telephonic conversation between the Prime Minister and the US Secretary of State as conscious efforts to normalize ties strained after untoward incident in Lahore late last month.
Senior officials in the staff of Prime Minister who was in Lahore when the Secretary of State telephoned him, told Online that Gilani apprised Clinton that judiciary was independent in Pakistan. “My government was bound to honour the court’s verdict even in the case of American national Raymond Davis,” they quoted the Prime Minister as talking to US Secretary of State.
