I am unanimously elected PM, says Gilani

LAHORE: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that he never enjoyed majority in the National Assembly but he was elected as Prime Minister unanimously and adding that he wants the strengthening of institutions, democracy and parliament and the PML-Q had supported the government on vital issues.

Talking to media after meeting with PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussian and Ch. Pervaiz Elahi on Monday, Prime Minister Gilani noted that the PML-Q had given vote to him unconditionally and he was elected as the Prime Minister unanimously.

We want strengthening of institutions, democracy and parliament; we are responsible parliamentarians and want strengthening of the parliament, the PM underlined.

Gilani said that the PML-Q has summoned the meeting on today (Tuesday) to consult and he hoped that the PML-Q would not take any step to derail democratic system and parliament. He said that the PML-Q had supported the government in all-important issues, adding that he exchanged views with Chaudhry brothers on various issues including the strengthening of the institutions and solution of problems of the masses.

He said that Ch. Shujaat summoned party’s meeting today (Tuesday) to take decision. He pointed out that Chaudhry brothers supported him without any condition despite part of the opposition and they also discussed other issues during the meeting.

The prime minister noted that JUI Amir Maulana Fazalur Rehman only the sacking of a federal minister and MQM on the objection of statement of Sindh Home Minister and they have one-point stance. He said that the two parties were the government allies for three years and he said that he would not criticize them.

To a question, he said that he has working relationship with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and noted that the decision about the recent meeting was taken after Turkish visit but the present situation was also discussed.

Gilani said that Punjab CM assured to take decision after consultation with party and added the CM has not yet taken any decision. He said that they did not talk about change of the prime minister.

To a question, he said that there is two methods of the non-confidence motions, one is the president advice and second is some one table non-confidence motion at the National Assembly and pointed out that bringing of the non-confidence motion is democratic right.

While, Ch. Shujaat has clarified that they have no personal differences with the prime minister, adding that the PML-Q had cooperated with him and assured that they would not take any step against him.

He said that the PML-Q wanted the strengthening of the institutions and would not become part of blackmailing to derail the democratic system.

Ch. Shujaat said that they discussed with the prime minister various issues including inflation, RGST and blasphemy law. He pointed out that the PML-Q has reservations and objection against the performance of the government not against the prime minister.

Meanwhile, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi noted that the opposition had supported the prime minister in the sixty-year history of the country but they cooperated with the prime minister for the welfare of the masses.

He said that the PPP and ML-N had jointly taken part in the elections but later on the PML-N quitted the central government and it still the government ally in Punjab. He said that they frequently said that the performance of the government was not satisfactory and they discussed this issue with the prime minister. He said that the PML-Q never blackmailed the government and not it would do in the future but the friendly opposition has to quit the government or opposition.
