356 killed in attacks on religious places in 2010

ISLAMABAD: At least 356 people have been reportedly killed in different terrorist attacks on the mosques, shrines and worship places across the country during 2010.

According to a TV report, after successful operation of security forces in Swat and South Waziristan, the terrorists started targeting worship places including Mosques, Imambargahs and minorities’ places. Despite high security arrangements at the sensitive places, militants attacked numerous worship sites.

According to data released by Interior Ministry, some 12 worshipping places targeted in the year of 2010 where 356 people were killed and 612 sustained injuries.

The first incident was occurred on February 18th at Akakhel in Tirah Valley, area of Khyber Agency killing 38 people and injured another 121. Second and third attacked were carried out at the worship places of Qadyanis in Garhi Shahu and Model Town, which claimed lives of 114 people while 117 sustained severe injuries in the attacks.

Later on two suicide bombers blew themselves in the premises of Data Darbar, the renowned shrine of Lahore on July 1st where 51 pilgrims lost their lives while 121 people injured in the incident. After 13 days another suicide attacker killed three persons and injured five others in the mosque of Landi Kotal.

On July 17th, five persons were killed and 22 injured in a suicide attack outside an Imambargah in Sargodha. The seventh attack was occurred on August 23 at a mosque of WANA where 36 people including former MNA, Maulana Noor Muhammad were killed while 43 others badly wounded. Another attack at a mosque in Bahawalpur claimed three lives while eleven persons were injured.

In 9th suicide attack on the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in Karachi, some 17 people were killed and seventy two others injured while eight people were murdered and 12 wounded in a suicide attack on the shrine of Baba Farid Ganj Shakar in Pak Patan on October 25th. A 16- year old suicide attacker blew himself during Friday prayer at a mosque situated in Dara Adam Khel which claimed 76 lives while 82 injured in the incident. The 12th and last incident of terrorism was occurred in a mosque of Budbheer area of Peshawar where five persons were killed while 17 other injured in the incidents.
