Former DG Hajj with other officials arrested on corruption charges

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: In pursuance of directives of interior minister Rehman Malik, FIA has launched massive crack down against the corrupt elements while over 10 officials including former Director General (DG) Hajj Rao Shakeel have been arrested on corruption charges.
According to media reports and FIA sources FIA crime circle had arrested former DG Hajj Rao Shakil for his alleged indulgence in widespread corruption during the course of hiring residential buildings for Pakistani pilgrims in Saudi Arabia and inflicting loss of Rs one billion to national exchequer.
Parliamentary committee for religious affairs had recommended for his removal from his office and the prime minister had removed him and made him OSD. He is on leave these days and FIA crime circle has taken him into custody.
The interior ministry sources told 5 persons including one officer of TCP have been arrested for their alleged involvement in purchasing substandard wheat and corrupt practices.
FIA has initiated operation in different parts of the country and report in this connection is being sent to interior minister Rehman Malik directly.
Sources told officers of certain other departments have also been taken into custody but their names are not being made public because credible evidence is needed with regard to arrested persons.
Sources told that interior minister was being backed fully by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in campaign against corruption. Crackdown will gather momentum in the days to come.
