Every third Pakistani women has osteoporosis: health experts

Karachi: One out of every three women over the age of fifty is suffering from osteoporosis in the country, said health experts.

They were discussing the issue at a Mini symposium on ‘Osteoporosis, a Silent Thief’ organized by Department of Neurosurgery at Liaquat National Hospital & Medical college in collaboration with Orthopedics, rheumatology, Gynecology, medicine and endocrine departments along with Novartis Pharma on Saturday.

Dr. Salman Faridi, the Medical Director, highlighted that osteoporosis was more of a silent aging process than a disease. He emphasized that simple measure taken in advance or later on as treatment can prevent the problem. He showed his concern for the public to be given awareness about osteoporosis by conducting CMEs and other means.

Dr. Khalid Imam, Consultant Endocrinologist talked about the effect of different drugs on bones. Moreover, he told that the problem was growing due to increased risk factors like sedentary lifestyle and dietary insufficiency.

Dr. Shahid Noor, Head of Orthopedics threw light on preventive measures which could be taken to avoid this problem from getting developed in bones.

Dr. Salman Sharif, Head of Neurosurgery talked about latest treatment modalities in spinal osteoporosis. He emphasized that majority of patient with osteoporotic spinal fractures did not require surgery and were treated with medicines.

Dr. Saeed Mahar, Consultant Endocrinologist mentioned dietary insufficiency as one of the leading causes. He emphasized upon the role of good diet or intake of supplements in cases of poor dietary habits.

Mr. Hassan Abbas, Head of Physiotherapy was very much concerned about the lack of exercises in our daily routine. He said that regular work out in any form is a preventive as well as a curing tool.

Dr. Mehfooz Alam, Consultant Rheumatologist discussed the treatment options for osteoporosis. He suggested intake of calcium and Vitamin D and Bisphosphonates improving the weak bones back to normal besides Hormone replacement therapy.

Dr. Zehra Naqvi, consultant Gynecologist discussed the statistics & epidemiology of Osteoporosis in females.

Panel discussions included Prof. Mashhoor Alam and Dr. Samina Ghaznavi from Medicine and Dr Amer and Dr Tahira from Rheumatology department.
