NHA chairman arrested from court

KARACHI: The Police on Saturday arrested the Chairman National Highway Authority (NHA) Chaudhry Altaf, and two other senior officials after additional and district session judge, Gulshan Ara Chandio rejected the interim Challan submitted by the investigation officer into Shershah bridge collapse case, and ordered arrest of authority officials.

The Former chairman NHA, Major General (Rtd) Farrukh Javed, and the project director of ECIL Company, which passed the architecture of the bridge, Mohammad Yousaf Barakzai, however managed to flee from the court in the police presence.

In the interim Challan, the investigation officer submitted that no conclusive evidence had been found against the accused, and that the government of Pakistan had conceded no loss in the wake of the bridge collapse.

Moreover, the Challan said, a sum of Rs 1.5 million each had been paid to the heirs of six deceased, who lost their lives in the incident, while Rs 500,000 each had been paid to 14 injured

The investigation officer, pleaded that no Challan could be submitted against the accused in given circumstances.

The court, however, rejected the interim Challan, and ordered the police to arrest the accused.

Following the orders, the police immediately took Chairman NHA, Chaudhry Altaf, former member motorway, Syed Najam-ul-Hassan, and Tauseef Ahmed, into custody, while Major General rtd Farrukh Javed, and Yousaf Barakzai managed to escape.

It is to be recorded that the Shershah bridge had collapsed on September 1, 2007 just six months after its inauguration by the then president General rtd Pervez Musharraf raising fingers on the professional competence of the NHA.
Six people were killed, while 14 injured in the incident, besides the government conceded a financial loss to the tune of millions of rupees.

The Supreme Court had taken suo-moto notice of the incident, ordering the police to lodge the case against the accused on the charges of negligence and unintentional murder
