LAHORE: A unique discovery of the remains of Deinotherium in the form of fossils, a primitive animal specie having lower denture with undisturbed set of teeth attached to the gums in pristine condition was found during the excavation at village Lava.
This terrible beast is known to have survived between epochs of Miocene to Pleistocene. Its ancestors or descendants are not yet known with complete confirmation due to non-availability of fossil record where-from a chain of identification could be testified. These history containing fossils are reported to be 14 million years old.
The excavation tour at the site was conducted under the supervisory guidance of Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar Chairman Department of Zoology and Registrar University of the Punjab, Lahore. The significance of fossils from the evolutionary point of view is crucial, which may provide solid information about clue of change in climate and proximate cause of its extinction. Also the petrified bony bits and pieces of dentition of ruminants (Rhinoceros, Giraffids, Suids and Bovids) were discovered from Dhok Bun Ameer Khatoon, Chakwal. Their age is calculated to be more than 8 million years old.
This is one of the best discoveries of fossils ever found in Pakistan. Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar is of the view that the world of Paleontology would learn a treasure of knowledge from them. And University of the Punjab is only institution in Pakistan with regard to the education of Vertebrate Paleontology.
