Educational revolution launched, says Minister

Lahore: Minister for Education, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said that an educational revolution has been launched by introducing “Four Year Degree Course” in the 26 degree colleges of the province. This step has been taken in the best in test of the students and four year degree programme will prove helpful for students to get employment and improve the quality of education.

He expressed these views while addressing a seminar on “Four Years Degree Course in 26 colleges and autonomy” held under the aegis of higher Education Department here today. VC University of Gujrat, Dr. Nizamuddin, VC Lahore College for Women University, Dr. Bushara Mateen, Addl. Director General HEC, Dr. Suhail Naqvi, Principal Government Islamia College Cooper Road, Prof. Farzana Shaheen and Principal Government College Saman Abad, Dr. Tasnim also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the salient features of “Four Year Degree Course”. The Education Minister said that the historical educational institutions of Punjab are our heritage and valuable assets. Nobody can even think about their privatization. He further stated that the 26 colleges are being granted financial and administrative autonomy and the Board of Governors of these colleges will not be authorized to enhance the tuition fee of colleges. The government has approved a grant of Rs. 50 crore for these colleges to meet the additional expenditures. He clarified that these colleges would be never privatized and government will hold administrative control of these colleges and teaching staff of these institutions would have the same service rules like the staff of other colleges.

Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman said that recent floods had badly damaged the schools and colleges of affected areas. The rehabilitation of these damaged institutions will be ensured at the earliest. He said that so many students of flood affected areas could not submit admission papers in colleges due to flood. Keeping in view their problems, the government had extended the admission date for one month. The Education Department has also recommended the fee concession for the students of these areas.

Addressing the functions, the Secretary Higher Education Ahad Khan Cheema said that 26 colleges are not being privatized, however, they are being granted financial and administrative autonomy. So that provision of quality education can be ensured by improving administration of these colleges. He further stated that courses of these colleges will have linkage with the market and qualified students will be able to get employment without any difficulty. The Secretary Higher Education assured that government will provide all necessary equipments for Science Labs and teaching staff to these colleges and these colleges will provide the education of university level.
