Gilani, Nawaz agree to set up Transparent Fund Raising Authority

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif have agreed to constitute a transparent Fund Raising Authority to ensure transparency of funds raising and distribution of relief items among the flood victims in the flood-hit areas of the country.

Addressing a joint press conference here on Saturday, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that the decision to constitute fund raising commission is being taken to evolve out a mechanism to ensure transparency in donations collected for the flood victims of the country and to gain the confidence of all the stakeholders.

The PM said the whole world is ready to extend aid and assistance to mitigate sufferings of the flood affectees. He urged people to donate for their brethren, adding that this act would restore the global community’s trust in us. He said that he and Nawaz agreed to reach to the people together to expedite the rehabilitation process.

Prime Minister Gilani stated that it could be too difficult to estimate the assessment of flood wreckages adding that floods has caused unprecedented devastations in the flood-hit areas and at this time of misery, everyone should come forward leaving aside political affiliations. “I would also be seen with PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif for fund raising campaigns for the affected people of floods’, said PM Gilani.

While PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif stated, “As Pakistanis, we have enough potential to bear the loss of flood wreckages ourselves, instead of looking for foreign assistance, therefore at this juncture of time, when the people in flood-hit areas were looking for relief efforts, we should ensure exemplary initiatives for facilitating the flood affectees.

Nawaz said, ‘I recommended to the Prime Minister to establish a committee to ensure transparent utilization of funds, and I also notified some names in this regard’. He said that the said body would launch a fund raising campaign across the country. He averred that Pakistani nation is resilient enough to meet any disaster. He said that the PM assured him that the federal government would also be a part of an austerity drive launched in all the provinces to use the money on rehabilitation. He called to expedite the rescue efforts.

Approximately 3.4 million houses have been turned to debris during prevailing flash floods across the country and today when the whole nation is sorrow over flood calamities, we should work unitedly to restore the lives and infrastructure in flood-hit areas, Nawaz said.

He also stated that during his Saturday’s meeting with the Premier, he has suggested constituting a ‘Fund Raising Authority’ to ensure transparency to collect donations and distribution of relief items among the flood victims. He added that floods have caused unprecedented destructions and loss of lives in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and now Punjab and Sindh were on the front of floodwaters, therefore, “We should also seek forgiveness from Almighty God, as intensity of floods were beyond imagination”.

PML-N chief also pointed that negating political affiliations, “We should work for the flood affectees with Human cause with unity adding that names that have been recommended for Fund raising Authority include Justice Rana Bhagwan Das, Justice Fakhar-ud-Din Ibrahim G, Dr Rizvi, Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Ali Ahmed Kurd.

Responding to a query, Prime Minister Gilani said that the relief assistance would be provided to the flood affectees by suspending developmental expenditures and the government has been working with missionary zeal to facilitate the flood affectees.

He also reiterated that any province of the country shouldn’t fear with the perspective that the federal government wouldn’t provide them relief from flood damages.

Replying to another query, PM Gilani said that the federal government has been making assessment of flood damages across the country and soon relief compensation packages would be announced for the flood victims.

Earlier, Nawaz and Gilani had held a meeting to discuss the flood aftermath.
