Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani met with General David Petraeus, commander of the NATO forces in Afghanistan Monday in which matters related to war against terror, Pak-Afghan border situation, Intelligence sharing and other matters of mutual interest were discussed.
According to military sources, this is the first meeting of General David Petraeus with the Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani after taking up the command of NATO forces in Afghanistan
Both the officials exchanged views over the situation of regional stability, the anti-terrorism campaign and the presence of militants in tribal areas, especially in North Waziristan, said sources.
The coming Parliamentary elections of Afghanistan and the negotiations’ policy with Taliban were also discussed in the meeting.
The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani acknowledged General David Petraeus’ appointment as commander of foreign forces in Afghanistan.
Sources told that Gen Petraeus thanking him said US has great relations with the political and military leadership of Pakistan and in his capacity has the NATO commander he would work to further consolidate these ties. He said with the help of Pakistan peace efforts in Afghanistan would be further strengthened.
Petraeus said Pakistani leadership would be taken into confidence on any policy on Afghanistan and their suggestions would be taken into account. He said we fully acknowledge the sacrifices made by the Pakistani troops and the people in war against terror.
