PM for developing system to pursue schemes regularly to accelerate pace of implementation

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani emphasized on prioritizing of the development projects / schemes in a manner so as to bring the backward areas at par with the developed regions of the country.

The Prime Minister was chairing a special meeting here at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat to review the progress on Peoples Works Programme.

While underling the significance of monitoring of projects / schemes from the inception to the implementation stage, the Prime Minister stated that it would ensure timely completion of the projects / schemes. He stressed upon the Public Affairs Wing of his Secretariat to further improve and upgrade the data base of the record to analyse the pace of progress and minimize impediments at different levels. He appreciated the coordination work of the Public Affairs Wing and mentioned it has been duly acknowledged by the people and their representatives in different areas.

The Prime Minister also underscored the need to develop a system to pursue the projects / schemes regularly in order to accelerate the pace of implementation. He also asked for periodical meetings between the concerned officials of all the relevant Ministries particularly the Ministries of Water & Power, Petroleum & Natural Resources and Housing & Works to streamline the whole process. The smooth flow of funds earmarked for the projects / schemes starting from allocations to sanction and disbursement, he said, was also be made more efficient since delay in this regard directly impacts the progress as well as performance of all the concerned departments / organizations.

Earlier, the Special Secretary apprised the Prime Minister of sectoral distribution and utilization of funds in the meeting. He stated that out of the total allocation of Rs 30 Billion in 2009-10, 45.2% have been earmarked for development schemes in Punjab while 20.8% went to Sindh, 17.3% to KPK, 3.5% to FATA and 13% to Balochistan. He informed that these funds have been utilized on Gas supply schemes, rural electrification, roads construction, water supply schemes, building of spurs, sewerage and sanitation schemes, education (repair and rehabilitation) and health (repair and rehabilitation) schemes.

While mentioning about the causes of delay in the completion of projects / schemes, the Special Secretary to the Prime Minister said that the Public Affairs Wing is devotedly involved in coordinating the efforts needed to ensure that the projects / schemes identified by Senators and MNAs are completed within time.
