Karakoram closed as water reaches spillway

Authorities closed down Karakoram Highway, while the helicopter service was suspended Thursday as the water from Attabad artificial lake is likely to drain through spillway in next 24 hours.

Water level at artificial lake has reached the threshold of spillway as it is now only four feet below it and is likely to pour out by tonight or tomorrow, local authorities have said. Civil and army officials are monitoring the situation around spillway through satellite cameras, and sirens will be sounded half an hour prior to the outflow of water.

District administration has closed down Karakoram Highway for all kinds of traffic for next few days, while helicopter service being operated to evacuate the stranded people and transport relief goods in affected areas has also been suspended.

More areas of Gilgit and Shishkat have been inundated and road link between Gilgit and Hunza was also ceased as water level rises.
