Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has refused the frontier as well as police force of other provinces’ access to record of mobile phone companies, adopting the stance that only on the special directions of Interior Ministry, police could be given access to the data record.

Official sources have informed that police forces of the Frontier, Punjab, Islamabad, Islamabad, Sindh, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan had contacted the PTA for access to the mobile phone companies’ record in order to trace out criminal and terrorist elements. Three most sensitive agencies have the access to the record of mobile phone companies. However no other security agency has the access to such a record.

Besides the four provinces had sought permission from the PTA for installment of mobile jammers in prisons. Sources have informed that the PTA in a letter addressed to the four provinces Inspector Generals of prisons, chief secretaries, home secretaries and concerned authorities has maintained that the authority can not provide access to cellular companies’ record. However on the special directions of the interior ministry, police could be given access to call data and in this connection police should directly contact the Interior Ministry.

In accordance with the law, the PTA considers the applications for installment of jammers in prisons. However formal applications should rout through the ministry of information and technology. Without PTA’s consent, no provincial government can fix jammers in prisons.
