Govt to take decision on VAT by taking all the stakeholders into confidence: Makhdoom Amin Fahim

Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim has said the government will take any decision regarding Value Added Tax (VAT) after taking all the stakeholders into confidence.

Commerce Minister said this while addressing a reception hosted in his honor by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here Saturday in a local hotel.

He indicated Pakistan had spent 40 billion dollars in war against terrorism so far. Talks for seeking access to the markets of member countries of European Union are proving fruitful.

He said that new Pak-Afghan transit trade pact would be given final shape during the current month. During the meeting with Afghan commerce minister matters relating to improvement in transportation system, anti smuggling measures and prevention of sale of transit goods in Pakistani markets were discussed, he added.

Power and gas crisis were persisting in the country and they were leaving negative impact on national economy, he said adding the government is working on short term and long term projects to overcome power crisis.

Zubair Motiwala said due to presence of corrupt elements in Afghan transit trade, we are facing difficulties in connection with the exports of genuine goods at large scale.

KCCI President Abdul Majid Haji Muhammad said the traders community had strong reservations over slapping of VAT from July, 1 as it was inappropriate step. It will affect the common man adversely, he added.
