The federal cabinet on Saturday approved the Labour Policy 2010 in a special meeting under which the minimum wages for the labourer has been raised from Rs6000 to Rs7000.
The special cabinet meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.
The meeting held Convention Center Islamabad, reviewed the Labour Policy hammered out by the Ministry of Labour and Manpower. The new Labour Policy will be put in force from June 1.
Under new policy, the industrial labourers will be entitled to further privileges and the forced labour would be put to an end.
Under the policy, the minors aged 14 to 18 would not be allowed to work in uncongenial and improper atmosphere. The number of women at any company would be specified under ILO Charter.
The new policy also stipulates the rules and regulations relating links between employers and employees.
Announcing the policy here on Labour Day Prime Minister congratulated the federal cabinet and the laborers of the country over approval of labor policy 2010
Terming approval of labour policy as accomplishment of dreams and vision of Benazir Bhutto announced to regularize all the contract employees working on contracts in the government sector.
Prime Minister also announced to increase pensions of registered labourers in accordance of government pensioners adding that age for old age benefit has been reduced from 55 years to 50 years.
He also emphasized that committees at district, provincial and federal level would also be constituted to ensure protection for the rights of the labourers adding that all the retired registered laborers would be facilitated with free medical treatment facility in government and private hospitals.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that workers related to agriculture sector would be benefited by making necessary legislation in law and minimum salary of Rs.7000/ would be ensured by making its delivery through banks.
Prime Minister also pointed that today the government by approving labor policy 2010has decided a major decision for good future of the laborers adding that the government would also issue Benazir Smart Cards for benefit of the poor classes of the country.
Implementation on Labor policy would be ensured from 1st June 2010 and in accordance of Labor policy 2010 manpower centers would be established in the cities and in aegis of workers Welfare fund matric technical scheme would be introduced for the benefit of the working classes of the country, Gillani said.
Prime Minister underlined that approval of labour policy was the dream of Shaheed Zulifqar Ali Bhutto as his services for the struggle of workers couldn’t be forget and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto despite odds and cases against her continued her struggle for the rights of laborers.
Prior to this during the cabinet meeting the Prime Minister also briefed the cabinet members on his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Bhutan and the progress made on the start of dialogue process with India
