Immunization week kicked off in Peshawar

The Provincial Minister for Excise and taxation, Liaqat Shebab has formally kicked off Immunization week in the province saying that the scheduled task will help in promoting a healthy generation by creating awareness about immunization in parents and providing protection against fatal diseases to children.

He was addressing as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony Immunization week to be celebrate from 24th to 30th April and National Immunization Days (NIDs) to be run from 26 to 28 of this month in a special ceremony in Peshawar on Saturday. Those who spoke on the occasion included Director General Health ,Dr,Fazl Mahmood, UNICEF Immunization Officer Dr, Bila, Deputy Director EPI, Dr.Mujahid Hussain and Dr.Mustafa Alam, said a handout issued here on Saturday.

The chief guest inaugurated the 3 day anti polio campaign by administering polio drops to children below 5 years on the occasion.

Referring to the poor status of child health, Liaqat Shebab regretted that majority of parent due to ignorance of the importance of vaccination show laxity in completing immunization course of their youngsters. “This negligence engulfs the lives of thousand of children”, he maintained. “Disability not only makes life of the affected child miserable but also proves him a burden for his family he maintained, He asked parents to ensure in time administration of vaccines for their kids. “As only healthy nations could reach the cherished goal of development and prosperity. Shebab underlined the need of working in missionary zeal for making the week a success. He specially appealed to the educationist to ply their active role in making parents aware of the importance of immunization. The minister also urged media men for sensitizing community in this regard.

The DG Health, Dr.Fazal Mahmood while elaborating polio status in the province informed that 12 polio case in the country and 3 in the province had been reported this year. He expressed satisfaction over the anti polio efforts in the province and hoped that soon circulation of polio virus would be confined in the province.

Dr .Bilal, UNICEF Immunization Officer termed strengthening of the routine immunization for eradication polio virus as must. “Immunization week is a practical step towards improvement of immunization status as immunization month observed last year in the province has brought encouraging results’, he remarked. Explaining the objectives of the immunization week, he said that it was aimed at educating mothers who were the real managers of their houses. He underscored the need of dissemination of the message of the week at grass root level.

Dr. Mujahid Hussain DD, EPI, told that the immunization week was being celebrated in 21 countries of the world including Pakistan. “During this week importance of vaccination against the dreadful diseases of polio. TB, Measles, Diptheria, Whooping cough, Pertussis, meningitis and Haemophilus Influenza will be focused”, he explained. He informed that a number of awareness civilities including dropping flairs from the airplane would be carried out in the province. He disclosed that 4.5 million target population of children would be vaccinated in anti polio drive to be run from 24 to 28 of this month. “Children from 6 to 5 years will be provided Vitamin A supplementation in drive also”, he asserted.
