17 injured as Protests against Khyber-Pakhtoonkhawa turns violent

At least 17 people were injured in severe clashes between protestors and police in Abbotabad as protests continued against the renaming of NWFP as Khyber-Pakhtoonkhawa

The workers of Tehreek Sooba Hazara despite the promulgation of Section-144 in the city come on the streets and clashes were reported between infuriated protestors and police.

According to media reports, workers of Tehrik-e-Sooba Hazara were gathered at Fawara Chowk and raised slogans against renaming of NWFP and in favour of Hazara province.

Workers of different political parties including Pakistan Peoples Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam – F and common people were among protestors. The police asked protestors to disperse peacefully but after refusal they started baton charge and used gas shelling.

Several people went unconscious when police resorted to tear-gassing in a bid to break up the demonstrators at Fawwarah Chawk.

The protestors also set Cantt Police Station on fire and the building was badly damaged.

The protestors held Black Flags and they were raising slogans against the government.

All main and small business hubs were closed and the roads presented the deserted look. Educational institutions were also closed.

In Mansehra also, the student organizations blocked Kashmir Road at Garhi Habibullah while staging protest demo there, reported a private TV channel.

The workers of Hazara Province Movement reached Fawwara Chawk in defiance of Section-144 in force in Abbotabad and choked Murree Road near Grid Station. Later on, police shelled the protesters with tear-gas which led several into unconsciousness.

Heavy contingents of additional police from Mardan, Swabi and other nearby areas have been deployed in Abbotabad areas.

The Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) are persistently on patrol in the city. However, the hide-and-seek is on the go between demonstrators and police amid various roads of the city blocked and tyres set ablaze on city streets.

According to Hazara Province Movement leader Sardar Hyder Zaman, the workers will at all costs arrive at Fawarah Chowk to protest there against Khyber Pakhtoonkhaw and in favour of Hazarah province.
