Air strike, clashes kill 124 in tribal regions

At least 124 people were killed and more than 70 injured in biggest offensive of security forces in different tribal areas including Khyber, Orakzai and South Waziristan agency.

According to media reports, the security forces backed by gunship helicopters targeted a local Jirga in remote area of Jamrud, Khyber agency, killing more than 60 militants and injuring 70 others. The killed were suspected militants that were active in the area bordering Afghanistan, sources said.

Military operation has been intensified against militants in Orakzai, Kurram and Khyber tribal agencies as all these agencies are near to each other to allow militants free movement.

Lashkar-e-Islam and Ansar-ul-Islam are the two prominent militants’ outfits who are fighting against each other on sectarian lines, and against security forces in the tribal area.

On the other hand, the sources said that the troops during a search operation in Bezotkhel and Baizoti area of Orakzai Agency found bodies of 54 militants.

Official sources said that the security forces searched the area and found 54 bodies. It was speculated that the bodies out of which many are militants believed to have been killed during the clash on Friday.

The insurgents were attacked as they entered Orakzai from the nearby Khyber tribal region to recapture the strategic checkpoint.

The security forces also claimed to have taken control of 90 per cent of the area during the massive military operation started against militants in Orakzai Agency on March 25.

The Orakzai offensive has become intensive since late March, in which over 350 militants have been killed or injured.

Above 80 percent people have left the area and moved to Hangu and Kohat cities as security forces have warned them to evacuate the area.

Large numbers of militants who had fled from South Waziristan tribal area arrived in Orakzai months ago before the military operation was started in the stronghold of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Besides, 10 militants were killed by security forces in South Waziristan tribal area, according to a local TV channel. The security forces traded heavy fire with militants in Sararoga area of South Waziristan and killed 10 militants. A Personnel of security forces also embraced martyrdom.
