Nawaz urges 18th amendment not to be tabled without consensus

Former premier, Quaid Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has said that the 18th amendment bill should not be tabled in the parliament adding that they wanted to resolve the issue of name of NWFP province amicably while PML-N have differences on the issue of judge’s appointment.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday the PML-N Quaid said that they had committed with the nation that 17th amendment would be repealed but unfortunately it could not happen thus so many other issues were associated with it.

He said that they had requested the Prime Minister to address all the core issues. He urged that there should be consultation among the state organs adding that there should be no clash between the institutions.

He said that the authority to appoint the judges should not be with one person. The PML-N Quaid said that judges represent the nation therefore they must introduce transparent system for the appointment of the judges and the system already exist in Charter of Democracy (CoD). He said that their interests based on good will. He said that Prime Minister wanted to table the 18th amendment bill without consensus adding that they believe the bill should be tabled after consensus.

PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif said that due to unnecessary delay the issues have been made complicated. He said that there was no consensus yet on judge’s appointment. He said that when they talk about threats to democracy they actually speak about their weakness adding that strong parliament and strong parties need not to think about threats to democracy.

He said that parliament and independent judiciary all these things were moving in the right direction. He said that no body should try to intervene in political affairs. He said that they had no consensus on judge’s appointment adding that CRC should be working till the time they reach on consensus. He said that they would not compromise on the judge’s appointment.

The PML-N Quaid said that PPP led Government had lost the golden opportunity of repealing 17th amendment. He said that they did not find transparency in many issues. He said that problems of masses were multiplying.

He urged that parliament and judiciary should have role in judge’s appointment. He said that they could not compromise on scandals and nation’s interests. He said that parliament must be appreciated for rejecting NRO. PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif further said that PM has to accept the deliberate delay in judge’s restoration.

In response to a question he said that opposition was not taken on board for US-Pak strategic dialogue adding that it was necessary that Government should take every political party on board on major issues. He said that they have no information about the agenda of strategic dialogue with USA urging that the government should have gone to the USA with mandate of the nation and in this regard opposition had not been given its due weightage.

He said that consultation was the need of the hour but unfortunately it could not happen however talks were going on. He said that they must strive to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

In response to a question he said that they have no objection on President’s address to the parliament adding that he was of the opinion that package should come first and then the President should address the parliament. He said that they wanted democracy to be strengthened.

He urged that writ of the government should be maintained. He said that parliament being a supreme body, must play its role affectively adding that they would not raise impediments.
