No single individual or authority should appoint judges: Nawaz Sharif

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said that appointments in the superior judiciary should be made on the recommendations of an independent judicial commission and with the approval of the Parliament.

He was talking to a 13-member delegation of Supreme Court Bar Association at his Raiwind residence on Saturday.

Nawaz Sharif said that his party would not let the government delay in doing away with the seventeenth amendment any further.

He said that he promises with the nation that politics of corruption and incapability would not be tolerated.

PML-N chief criticised the government policies that ignore the basic problems faced with the general public. He warned that this indifferent attitude could endanger the future of democracy.

Bar Association President speaking on the occasion said that it was only due to efforts of the Pakistan Muslim League-N that judiciary was made independent and now we have hope with Nawaz Sharif that he would play his role in the appointment of judges in the Lahore High Court and for upholding the judiciary

The lawyers’ community expressed their apprehension that conspiracies were still being hatched against the judiciary.

Nawaz Sharif assured the delegation that his party regards independence of judiciary as of utmost importance for the coming generation and the future of Pakistan.

He said that we want the appointment of judges in the higher judiciary to be transparent should be made on the recommendations of an independent judicial commission and with the approval of the Parliament

He said that the attitude of Pervez Musharraf towards the Chief Justice of Pakistan was shameful and it is condemned in the strongest word.

He said that one-man rule is a threat to the unity of the country and we do not want one single individual or authority should appoint judges.

He said that after pondering over CoD for one year we had suggested a transparent way and we would not let the government deviate and neither would we tolerate any delay.

Nawaz Sharif paid great tribute to the independent judiciary and said that the courts by giving verdicts of bringing back corruption and looted money like in the Bank of Punjab case and Pakistan Steel Mills is commendable.

He said that N-league is in full cognizance of its responsibilities and we would play our role for strengthening of democratic institutions.
