The Indus River System Authority has stopped providing water to the provinces from Mangla and Tarbela Dams after water in these two big reservoirs reached dead level.

Sources in the Irsa said on Monday that with water reaching dead level in these two reservoirs, severe shortage was recorded in generation of electricity.

Sources said that water in Mangla Dam had reached dead level 1040ft ten days ago, while in Tarbela Dam water reached dead level of 1378 ft on Monday after which there is no storage of water in these two reservoirs and provision of water to provinces has been stopped.

Sources said now water coming into rivers would be distributed among provinces but water at dead level in the reservoirs, provinces could not be provided water from the reservoirs.

Irsa sources said that such situation arises at the end of Rabi season when dams reach dead level.

However, according to Pepco sources there would be about 800 to 1000MW shortage in the generation of electricity with water in these dams reached dead level, while total shortage has reached 2500 to 3000 MW.

Sources said that presently electricity demand is 13500MW, while supply is only 1100MW and expressed the hope that rains are expected in April, which would improve the situation.

On the other hand, Pepco has opposed forwarding clocks by one hour from April 1st, saying, the move is saving only 300MW, which is not helpful in overcoming power crises.

The ministry of water and power is pondering over a proposal to advance clocks by one hour.
